Star Wars
May the Force...
At first, I was not that kind of crazy about the whole sci-fi genre. I did have some of the odd figurines lying around, but it simply did not do it for me. Until...I decided to go to the premiere of The Phantom Menace in the old Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam, where I was studying at the time. I stood in line waiting to get in, flanked by Storm Stroopers, Jedi's, Han Solo's and even a couple of Darth Vaders. I felt the full excitement of true believers of a movie that started somewhere in the middle of the plot...I became a fan. Not as huge as the ones standing in line, but nevertheless a fan of Star Wars.
Star Wars is, as we know, an American family saga. A bit like the Family Robinson is space. The great George Lucas has literally put all his money on this story...an dit paid off. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away", following the main story of one Anakin Skywalker and his son Luke.
The first film in the series, Star Wars was later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope, was released in 1977 and became a worldwide culture phenomenon. It was followed by the similarly-successful sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); these three films constitute the original Star Wars trilogy. A prequel trilogy was later released between 1999 and 2005, which received a more mixed reaction from critics and fans compared to the original trilogy.
The saga continues in just a couple of days with The Force Awakens. The Force Awakens is the first film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, announced after Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm in October 2012. The film is produced by J.J. Abrams. Star Wars creator George Lucas served as creative consultant during the film's early production stages.
And more will follow. Even Han Solo will get his own in the coming years. But for now, may the force be with you! Enjoy
